The StoryCorps Mobile Tour will be in SWFL from Feb. 15 to March 15
Founded in 2003 as an independent nonprofit, the StoryCorps team has now helped nearly 700,000 people across the country have meaningful conversations about their lives, most of which are collected in the U.S. Library of Congress and in their own online archive. StoryCorps has been a beloved segment heard weekly on NPR stations on Friday mornings during Morning Edition for about 20 years. The StoryCorps Mobile Tour will be setting up shop in Fort Myers from Feb. 15 through Mar. 15, and registration opens on Feb. 1. Participants can choose to record in-person in the mobile airstream travel trailer, or remotely in a “virtual recording booth.” To learn more about the process, we talk with the Director of the StoryCorps Mobile Tour, Lea Zikmund.

'Dry Tortugas: Stronghold of Nature' author and photographer Ian Wilson-Navarro
Conservation photographer Ian Wilson-Navarro was born in Miami but has lived his entire life in Key Largo. He got his first camera as a teenager, and first visited the Dry Tortugas around that same time camping and fishing with his father. In 2021, he and a friend were chosen for a National Parks Arts Foundation artist residency in the Dry Tortugas on Loggerhead Key. His proposal for the residency pitched the idea of capturing images to create a book, and that book is now out. "Dry Tortugas: Stronghold of Nature" was published last month by University Press of Florida. It features about 200 of his photographs along with essays by people with intimate knowledge of the park who explore its history, culture, and environment.

PBS NOVA 'Weathering the Future' panel discussion at The Water School at FGCU
On April 10 WGCU hosted an event at Florida Gulf Coast University’s Water School that featured NOVA Executive Producer Chris Schmidt. That day we screened parts of the NOVA episode Weathering the Future for an audience of about 200 people. Between the segments we chatted with him, as well as two FGCU professors about issues raised in the film and the challenges we face in Southwest Florida when it comes to adapting to our changing climate. Chris talked about the challenges NOVA faces in communicating science to a broad audience, and Dr. Win Everham and Dr. Molly Nation helped tie it all together.
