COVID-19 Morning Report
State health officials reported 3,356 new COVID-19 cases, Thursday bringing Florida's total to 744,988 cases. The Florida Department of Health also reported 141 new coronavirus-related deaths, Oct. 15, increasing the statewide death toll to 15,932 fatalities.Of the 5,650,724 COVID-19 tests that have been reported in Florida so far, the overall positivity rate stands at 13.18% and the state health department reports the latest single day positivity rate fell slightly from the previous day to 5.16%.

Preserve or develop? Race against time to protect Florida’s Wildlife Corridor
When Governor Ron DeSantis signed the Florida Wildlife Corridor Act into law in the summer of 2021, the occasion was met with a flurry of glowing headlines and general celebration by conservationists across the state. But the effort to protect the integrity of Florida’s landscape is a race against time. It remains entirely legal to develop land within much of the corridor’s boundaries, even if such development would destroy the landscape-scale connectivity the law is meant to preserve. The corridor, in other words, remains under siege by development. And the state and federal governments have not been too eager to stop it.

INTERCEPT Task Force looks to put a stop to human trafficking, sexploitation of children
It’s official, the Southwest Florida INTERCEPT Task Force is at work fighting human trafficking and the sexploitation of children.The task force held a news conference Thursday afternoon in Naples to announce the formation. The task force was created earlier this year.
NTSB moves crashed jet from I-75 to Jacksonville; Freeway SB opens
The National Transportation Safety Board moved the remains of a crashed private jet from Interstate 75 in Collier County to Jacksonville on Sunday.The investigation moving off the freeway allowed the Florida Highway Patrol to reopen I-75 southbound shortly after 7 p.m. Sunday."There is not much information available at this time. Investigators are continuing to examine and document scene and aircraft," a NTSB spokesman said via email Sunday.
Uncontrolled Sandy Fire grows to 8,400 acres despite weeklong containment efforts
The Sandy Fire broke out Monday at 50 acres in the far eastern part of Collier County. By Sunday morning the fire had spread to 8,398 acres and containment remained at 0%.
