  • While it might seem obvious that a devastating hurricane would have an immediate negative impact on the mental well-being of those impacted, there is a growing understanding among mental health professionals that underlying concerns over possible future natural disasters is also weighing on many people’s minds. And there is growing evidence that the growing size and scope of natural disasters is being driven by climate change. We talk with Dr. Lise Van Susteren, she is a forensic psychiatrist who is an expert on the physical and psychological impacts of climate change.

  • It’s now been two days since Hurricane Ian swept through southwest Florida causing massive and widespread devastation. Search and rescue efforts are still underway in many areas, especially out on Sanibel Island which has been cut off from the mainland.State emergency managers are not fully confirming the death toll so far from Ian but it appears that at least 20 people were killed. We’ll have more details on that as they become available. Today we’re going to talk about some of the ways people can help…especially through financial donations.We’ll also talk with some of our reporters and producers to hear what they’ve been seeing and experiencing since the storm passed.
  • The American Bittern is known to science as Botaurus lentiginosus – a name that tells us a bit about it. Botaurus is derived from an old English word that refers to a bull – because this bird’s unique deep-throated call reminded people of the bellowing of a bull. The species name “lentiginosus” means freckled – a reference to the tiny black spots on this bittern’s back.
