  • While it might be easy to say that we should all be more compassionate and kind, and have empathy for everyone around us, it’s usually not something that comes easily or naturally for most of us, and can even be seen as a sign of weakness in our highly competitive culture. As we start another year, we’re having a conversation about the importance of compassion, kindness, and empathy through the lens of Florida Gulf Coast University’s Roots of Compassion and Kindness (ROCK) Center. It's dedicated to teaching college students about compassion, using insights from psychologists, philosophers, neuroscientists, and scholars from across disciplines. We're joined by its Director and two of its faculty members.
  • Every year hundreds of thousands of students in dozens of countries act as delegates in a simulation of the United Nations. The 33rd annual Southwest Florida Model UN was held on the campus of Florida Gulf Coast University last week. This year’s keynote speaker was Andrea Bedoya. She’s a 2020 graduate of Florida Gulf Coast University, and since leaving FGCU with her Political Science degree her career has already spanned four continents and a wide range of global service experiences. She stopped by the studio while she was back on campus to chat.
  • The Collier Community Foundation has continued its financial support of Audubon Florida’s Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary, the popular environmental attraction east of Naples, with a $100,000 grant. The foundation’s money is being added to donations from many other individuals, groups, and businesses in the sanctuary’s $20 million renovation effort to transform and expand the aging sanctuary.
  • State health officials reported 509 new cases of COVID-19, Tuesday, bringing the statewide total of 52,255 confirmed cases. The Florida Department of Health also reported seven new deaths, yesterday, for a total of 2,252 fatalities including 1,089 deaths associated with long-term care facilities.The total number of COVID-19-related hospitalizations in Florida now stands at 9,482 patients.Of the 924,920 test results that have been reported in Florida so far, 5.6% have been positive for the virus. The rate of positive tests has been trending downward for weeks.
  • Residents and business owners of Bonita Springs attended a meeting held by Barron Collier Companies to share their thoughts on development of Imperial Crossing, the former spot of mobile park home Bamboo Village. Some residents are excited to see a more modern-style project within the city, while some are disappointed and concerned about the lack of charm.
  • State health officials reported 2,541 new COVID-19 cases, Thursday bringing Florida's total to 693,040 cases. The Florida Department of Health also reported 177 new coronavirus-related deaths, Sept. 24, increasing the statewide death toll to 13,961 fatalities.Of the 5,186,646 COVID-19 tests that have been reported in Florida so far, the overall positivity rate has reduced to 13.36% and the latest single-day positivity rate fell to 4.44% after rising about the five percent threshold in the previous two days.
