Big Cypress National Preserve fire growing slower; containment rises
Firefighters worked through the night Tuesday on the 10,551-acre wildfire growing in the Big Cypress National Preserve east of Naples, a tactic that appears to be working as control of the Sandy Wildfire rose from 5% to 15%.
E-scooter program rolls out first phase in Fort Myers as family mourns e-scooter victim
About one month after Richard Ruel died in a fatal e-scooter accident, his family is still mourning as the City of Fort Myers and Spin, a micromobility company headquartered in San Francisco, Calif., began rolling out the first phase of an agreement to bring a new form of transportation to the streets of downtown Fort Myers. While some support the initiative, others are concerned about what the program lacks and what it could bring to the already bustling streets and sidewalks of the downtown area.
Wildfire in Big Cypress National Preserve grows to 511 acres, no containment; other fires reported
Despite rains that extremely dry ground siphoned up almost as soon as it fell Thursday, Friday and Saturday, several brush fires still managed to erupt across the area. The largest is in the Big Cypress National Preserve, in an area north of I-75.
