Drought gripping Southwest Florida; record-setting likely in Sarasota, Venice, Bradenton
Southwest Florida is in the midst of an abnormally dry to moderate drought.
'First They Came For My College' tells the story of the takeover of New College in Sarasota
In January of 2023 Governor Ron DeSantis appointed six new trustees at New College of Florida in Sarasota, and they immediately set about to change the state’s public honors college. As this was playing out, a team of filmmakers which included New College alumni were documenting events on campus, from the Board of Trustee meetings to just students spending time on campus. Now, the new documentary film “First They Came for My College” is making the rounds at film festivals. We talk with the film's director and one of its producers.

Sarasota Dolphin Research Program documents record number of dolphin births in 2021
This has turned out to be a record year for the number of dolphin calves born in and around Sarasota Bay. Researchers with the Chicago Zoological Society’s Sarasota Dolphin Research Program (SDRP) have documented 22 dolphin births so far this year, exceeding the record of 21 set in 2017. We learn about the program, and what’s made 2021 a record breaking year for new dolphin births.

George Balanchine is often called the father of American ballet, A groundbreaking choreographer and co-founder of New York City Ballet, his innovative neoclassical style made him one of the most transformative figures in dance history. In “Masters of Movement,” Sarasota Ballet pays tribute to Balanchine with two dances that celebrate composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart.

Sarasota's cozy Urbanite Theatre known for offering contemporary plays in an immersive space
Urbanite Theatre is entering its 11th season in Sarasota. According to Producing Artistic Director Summer Wallace, “Urbanite Theatre … is focused on new contemporary plays … that make you feel and make you think,” and Urbanite’s cozy confines especially lend themselves to intimate, immersive shows.
