Lee County School Board to alter job descriptions, change start times
The School Board of Lee County has voted to change the job descriptions of several key positions. The action begins a restructuring of some district operations. The decision came despite opposition from some members of the public, district employees and one member of the board.The board also voted to implement the Safe Start Initiative, which would change school start times district-wide for the 2025-2026 school year. The initiative passed with a 7-0 vote.
The swing-state counties hit by Hurricane Helene mostly voted for Trump in 2020
The key presidential states of Georgia and North Carolina were hit particularly hard by Hurricane Helene. NPR compared which counties qualify for FEMA aid with 2020 election results. The area is largely Republican.
Enrollment open for spring VPK programs in Lee, Collier, Hendry and Glades Counties
Registration for Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) is now open for spring programs in Lee, Collier, Hendry and Glades Counties. The free educational program is available to 4-year-olds who reside in Florida, regardless of family income.

Boys & Girls Clubs of Lee County after-school program spots open
Boys & Girls Clubs of Lee County are accepting registrations for after-school programs that begin Aug. 10 at six locations across the county.Clubs provide homework assistance and tutoring services, as well as project-based learning activities, arts instruction, sports and recreation programs, and service and leadership projects. Clubs also offer technology centers to enhance learning and play.

The Florida Department of Health reported 77,326 coronavirus positive tests statewide Monday; an increase of 1,758 in 24 hours.
U.S Supreme Court clears way for execution in Charlotte County case
The U.S. Supreme Court on Wednesday rejected an appeal by Florida Death Row inmate James Ford, setting the stage for his execution Thursday in the 1997 murders of a couple in Charlotte County.The Supreme Court declined to issue a stay of execution or to take up an appeal by Ford. As is common, the Supreme Court did not explain its reasons.
