Crashes involving vehicles and pedestrians have risen in Lee County; fatalities also increase
Florida ranks the second deadliest state for pedestrians, according to a 2022 report by the National Complete Streets Coalition, a part of Smart Growth America. Throughout 2022 in Lee County, there were 319 crashes in Lee County involving bicyclists, an increase from 2021 where there were 256. Nine crashes resulted in fatalities.

Reopening district schools a priority for Lee County but some buildings may be beyond repair
Photos posted Monday showed damage at Lee County schools on Pine Island, Sanibel and Fort Myers Beach. School superintendent Dr. Christopher Bernier, i a video posted to Facebook Monday, outlined several aspects of what the county schools are doing including a food distribution event and making plans to restart school despite the buildings that have been damaged.

Lee and Collier counties are taking a new approach to eradicating poverty by offering education to residents across diverse income brackets.The first step was a recent two-day event involving role-play by various people who work for businesses and agencies dealing with hunger and homelessness.
Report: Moonlighting ex-Collier official lobbied for county vendor in 'apparent' conflict of interest
A new report by the Collier County Office of the Inspector General reveals that one of former Collier County Deputy Manager Sean Callahan undisclosed lobbyist clients, Jacobs Solutions, is a long-time vendor for Collier County. Callahan was quietly fired in January of 2022 after county staff discovered he was secretly working as a lobbyist for a powerful Washington D.C. lobbying firm — a moonlighting job that violated county policies, ethical guidelines, and anti-fraud measures.
New Lee County Public Safety Building accommodates more employees, boosts efficiency
The Lee County Public Safety Center, formerly the Lee Emergency Operations Center, opened Thursday following a ribbon cutting ceremony. The Public Safety Center features a second building attached to the existing Emergency Operations Center building.

Drivers passing stopped school buses in Lee County will soon find themselves with a violation
Lee County drivers have a little more than a month to prepare to do what they should have been doing all along. Stop for school buses. The month-long grace period is part of a Lee County school district program making bus safety a priority. The district plan will capture video evidence of drivers illegally passing stopped school buses.
