School District of Lee County Encouraging Thousands of Students to Return to In-Person Learning
Over the summer the School District of Lee County developed a virtual learning model called Lee Home Connect. Students in the program would attend classes remotely in real time, following the normal school class schedules. Now, the district is encouraging almost three-quarters of those students — about 16,000 kids in all — to return to in-person learning for the second semester because they are not making adequate progress in their online classes.

Justices reject appeal to block execution from condemned killer of Charlotte County couple
Less than a week before convicted murderer James Ford is scheduled to be put to death by lethal injection, the Florida Supreme Court on Friday unanimously rejected an appeal aimed at blocking the execution.The Supreme Court issued a 22-page opinion upholding a Jan. 23 decision by Charlotte County Circuit Judge Lisa Porter, who turned down arguments by Ford’s attorneys. Ford is scheduled to be executed Thursday at Florida State Prison in the 1997 murders of Greg and Kimberly Malnory at a Charlotte County sod farm.

MS Center of SWFL offers free services at locations around Lee & Collier counties
Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic neurological condition where a person’s immune system attacks the protective covering of nerve fibers in their central nervous system. MS can greatly impact an individual's life, from just mobility issues making daily activities difficult, to relationships and emotional well-being. Treatment generally focuses on managing symptoms and slowing disease progression through medications, physical therapy, lifestyle modifications, and support services. The Multiple Sclerosis Center of Southwest Florida has been providing support services to people with MS since 2000 — all for free. To learn more we talk with the center’s CEO, Kay Jasso.

Lee County Visitor and Convention Bureau promotes tourism with four-stage recovery campaign
The Lee County Visitor and Convention Bureau (VCB) developed a four-stage recovery campaign to promote tourism in Lee County by spreading excitement as the current focus. “The goal is to show that the destination is bouncing back,” Tamara Pigott, the director of VCB said. “While things may not be “normal” just yet, there is still an opportunity to have an enjoyable experience and support the community they’ve so enjoyed visiting in the past.”
