‘You are playing games’: School tax fight erupts after Sarasota vote
Local officials thought a dispute over who would pay to collect a voter-approved school tax had been settled when Sarasota County commissioners agreed in a surprise vote this week to resume covering the millions of dollars withheld by Tax Collector Mike Moran. Turns out, the fight isn’t over. Behind the scenes, county, school and tax officials spent the next few days sparring over whether Tuesday’s commission vote actually restored the decades-old practice — or whether another formal vote would be required before the money could be released to the school district, according to emails obtained by Suncoast Searchlight.
iPhone Updated with New Features, Lower Price
Apple CEO Steve Jobs has announced the next generation of the popular iPhone. The new version, due in stores July 11, runs on the fast 3G network. The 3G iPhone costs less money and has other few new features. The new iPhone starts at $199 — far less than the $600 price tag when the phone debuted a year ago.

DeSantis, Cabinet consider conservation land deals
Gov. Ron DeSantis and the state Cabinet could be poised to approve spending more than $318 million to buy conservation land and enter other deals that would shield rural properties from development.State staff members have recommended that DeSantis and the Cabinet approve 20 proposals totaling 86,819 acres in 15 counties, from Santa Rosa County in the Panhandle to Glades and Martin counties along Lake Okeechobee. DeSantis and the Cabinet will meet Tuesday.
