2024 Sanibel Island beach parking permit sales begin Monday
Beach parking passes can be purchased starting on Monday, November 13, at the Sanibel Recreation Center, 3880 Sanibel-Captiva Road.
FMPD update: Five teens in fatal crash drowned; speed was factor
Fort Myers police said the five teens killed when their car crashed into a retention pond Sunday night died from drowning. Three also suffered blunt force trauma. Acting Captain Shawn Yates at a press briefing Friday afternoon said the department’s investigation remains active. He said social media tips and surveillance video of the vehicle have provided additional details.

Convalescent Plasma Update & New Antibody Treatment Gets FDA Emergency Use Authorization
As the coronavirus outbreak continues researchers and doctors continue working to find new ways to treat Covid-19. Since the end of April Lee Health has been testing the use of convalescent plasma. It’s taken from the blood of people who have recovered from Covid-19 and then infused into people who are sick to hopefully reduce the severity of the disease.

Fort Myers taps the brakes on allowing golf carts on some streets
Some Fort Myers city leaders are voicing concerns about the idea of allowing golf carts on some streets, under certain conditions. City council members want to get more information on how other communities have dealt with golf carts on streets. The idea remains alive with the support of Fort Myers City Councilman Fred Burson.

Big Cypress National Preserve issues temporary trail closure
A temporary trail closure in the Big Cypress National Preserve is in effect after the discovery Saturday of a more than 340-acre fire east of State Road 29 and north of Deep Lake.The temporary closures include the Deep Lake Trail (including Trail Head) and the Fire Prairie Trail. During the closure all recreational use including off-road vehicles, hiking, camping, hunting and commercial activities are prohibited in the designated areas.

Charlotte detective intercepts scammers while picking up lunch
Two scammers from out-of-county were intercepted by a Charlotte County Sheriff's Office detective in a Punta Gorda Publix parking lot after they tried to sell items from their trunk while parked in a handicapped parking space.A report from the Sheriff's Office indicated that on Monday, a detective in an unmarked vehicle observed suspicious activity in the Publix parking lot at 2310 Tamiami Trail in Punta Gorda while he was picking up his lunch.
