Lee County man pleads guilty in connection with $1.35 million COVID relief fraud scheme
Evan Graves, 40, of Alva, pleaded guilty to wire fraud in connection with a $1.35 million COVID relief fraud scheme and now faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison. A sentencing date for Graves has not yet been set. As part of his guilty plea, Graves has agreed to forfeit approximately $1,355,600 and six properties in Fort Myers that he had purchased or funded using proceeds of his fraud.

Collier County leaders are refusing to approve hundreds of new homes on farmland east of Collier Boulevard. Commissioners voted Tuesday to continue an item for the approval to build 423 homes on 170 acres along Sabal Palm Road.

The suspect in the 45-year-old homicide of a Punta Gorda store clerk has been identified as a then active-duty Charlotte County Sheriff's Office deputy who reported the killing.The case, investigated several times over the years, was picked up again after the county formed a cold case unit in 2009. New evidence and witnesses lead investigators to the suspect.The former deputy, John J. Greer, acknowledged his involvement a year before he passed away in 2024.

Lee County will be the recipient of a $25 million bridge loan to Lee County through the Local Government Emergency Bridge Loan Program. The program was created in a Special Legislative Session earlier this year and is administered by the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity to support government operations that may have been impacted by hurricanes Ian or Nicole.
