Deaths now at least 100 from Hurricane Ian; 46 officially in Lee, five in Collier, two in Charlotte
Based on a tally provided by the state and additional calculations by NPR (WGCU is a member station), the number of those killed is at least 100.
Three bears killed in Collier area where man, dog fatally attacked; DNA sent to Gainesville for testing
Three black bears have been killed in an area of Collier County that saw a man and a dog fatally attacked on Monday.The early Monday attack resulted in the death of 89-year-old Robert Markel in the rural community of Jerome. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission is continuing to investigate the attack which occurred in the area of State Road 29 and U.S. 41, just south of Big Cypress Wildlife Management Area.
Return on investment warrants increase in this year's arts and culture grants, says United Arts Collier's Elysia Dawn
Last June, the Florida Division of Arts & Culture gave arts organizations three weeks to file applications for this year’s Florida arts & culture grants. United Arts Collier Executive Director Elysia Dawn was in Tallahassee recently to advocate for funding. She reports that 746 organizations have qualified for grants. They’re seeking $76 million. That represents .06 percent of the state’s $117.4 billion budget. Dawn says the return on investment provided by arts organizations warrants the increase she's seeking.

Tide of trash: Volunteers battle to save Lee County’s beaches
Battered by hurricanes and heavy tourism, Lee County’s beaches are fighting a quiet battle: an overwhelming tide of trash. From mangroves to the sandy shores, volunteers have hauled away tens of thousands of pounds of debris this past year, a stubborn reminder that paradise needs constant protection.In the past year alone, cleanup crews and volunteers in Lee County have collected more than 50,000 pounds of trash from beaches, waterways, and mangroves. Powerful storms and careless visitors dumped much of the stuff on the coastline.
