School Board member’s comment on Guatemalan students sparks ire at Lee County school board meeting
At Tuesday night’s school board meeting, speakers took to the podium during the public comments period to voice their disapproval of a district board member’s comments regarding Guatemalan students. During a Zoom community forum, board member Chris Patricca was discussing the difficulties administrators face when figuring out placement for incoming international students based on their age and education level.

Lee joins Collier, Hendry in enacting county-wide burn ban; Cape Coral also limits fires
The Lee County ordinance bans “outdoor burning ignition sources,” including campfires, bonfires and trash burning. Grills for food and backyard fire rings are not included. Officials ask all county residents to be mindful of dry conditions and to use good judgment to mitigate potential for significant wildfires.

A 1,733-acre wildfire was being fought in the Picayune Strand State Forest in Collier County Monday afternoon. The fire was south of Alligator Alley and prompted a warning from the Florida Highway Patrol.

Broadway Palm and Cape Coral Animal Shelter join forces to draw attention to Lee County cat crisis
There are an estimated 250,000 feral and community cats on the loose in Lee County on any given day. To raise awareness about the magnitude of the problem - and to inspire people to adopt some of the shelter's cats and kittens, Lee County Animal Shelter has collaborated with Broadway Palm on its production of Andrew Lloyd Webber's "CATS."

Lots of trash — collection — news from Lee County:Beginning Monday, April 29, residents of the City of Bonita Springs and the Town of Fort Myers Beach only have to put their trash, recycling and yard waste to the curb once a week. And:Village of Estero residents may safely and responsibly dispose of household chemical waste (HCW) such as leftover paints, cleaners, herbicides, pesticides, automotive fluids and pool chemicals on Wednesday, April 17. Batch of wrong Lee County TRIM notices sent; 24,000 replacements set to be mailed out by Tuesday
Some 24,000 TRIM notices for the wrong year were mailed Friday to Lee County homeowners, by mistake.Property Appraiser Matt Caldwell says the error was made when a batch of the notices did not get overwritten with the current year's data.
