Disaster Unemployment Assistance available for Sarasota County residents impacted by Hurricane Debby
Disaster Unemployment Assistance is now available to businesses and residents in Sarasota County whose employment or self-employment was lost or interrupted as a direct result of Hurricane Debby and are not eligible for regular state or federal Reemployment Assistance benefits.The benefits, announced by FloridaCommerce, are for eligible Floridians whose employment or self-employment was lost or interrupted as a direct result of Hurricane Debby are encouraged to submit a claim at FloridaJobs.org.
Burn ban authorized in Collier County due to dry conditions
Collier County's Board of County Commissioners has authorized a burn ban in the county effective this week due to dry conditions.The decision for the ban came after consultation between the Collier County Bureau of Emergency Services, Florida Forest Service, Collier County Fire Chiefs’ Association, Collier County Sheriff’s Office, and the National Weather Service jointly identified a need for a burning ban to become effective immediately after certain environmental conditions were met, including dry conditions. Burn bans have also been announced in the past week in Sarasota and Hendry counties due to the same dry conditions.

Empowerment Farm sustains significant damage from Debby; buildings flooded, under water
A nonprofit Collier County organization dedicated to fostering community through compassion, cooperation, and connection to the land, animals, and each other, sustained significant damage when Debby transited the coastal area as a tropical storm. Empowerment Farm was impacted by storm flooding on August 4, with water levels at the Garland Road site in Naples continuing to rise on August 5, forcing the evacuation of the farm’s animals to private off-site facilities and the cancellation of all on-site programs.
