Sea turtle nest counts for 2024: lower numbers for some species, solid, record numbers for others
The Florida Fish and Wildlife's Research Bulletin for February reports that 2024 nesting numbers for sea turtles were no surprise, recording lower numbers for some species but also posting solid and record-breaking counts for other species.The counts are the result of the Florida Index Nesting Beach Survey which records sea turtle nest counts on a standardized set of index beaches. Researchers use the annual survey to determine nesting trends.
Coast Guard rescues eight from disabled boat off Venice
A U.S. Coast Guard boat crew rescued eight boaters Saturday after their 26-foot vessel became disabled in the Gulf about 35 miles west of Venice.The boaters and vessel were brought back to a Venice Inlet boat ramp with no reported injuries.
Punta Gorda man's lawsuit over scrub jay fee gets boost
A Punta Gorda man's lawsuit involving Charlotte County's "Scrub Jay Fee" — Colosi v. Charlotte County, U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, et al., — got a boost in federal district court.The court handed Pacific Legal Foundation a major win in the case by turning down Charlotte County's and the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service's motion to dismiss PLF’s constitutional claims.

Boil water notice rescinded for Wildcat Run area in Estero
Close to 90 No Kings events set across Florida Saturday
More than 2,500 locations are being listed for a country-spanning No Kings demonstration on Saturday. Close to 90 of those locations are in Florida with about a dozen spread throughout Southwest Florida from Bradenton to Naples and Sanibel to Sebring.The events are being called a response to what has been termed as actions that resemble authoritarianism carried out by the Trump Administration.
