In my life, I have found myself as a colored, a negro, a Black, an African American, and a person of color. This story is my reflection as a colored girl. My mother, Bernice Andrews Russell is memorialized on a mural in Punta Gorda. She was my example of the colored woman that a colored girl like me must aspire to be.

Police investigate the shooting death of man who often confronted alleged pedophiles
Robert Wayne Lee, known online as "Boopac Shakur," was killed during an argument in a Michigan restaurant. So far, there is no evidence the confrontation was a planned sting by Lee, police said.
Federal judge to weigh school pronoun restrictions
A federal judge Friday will hear arguments in an attempt by a transgender teacher and a nonbinary teacher to block part of a 2023 law that restricts pronouns and titles that educators can use in Florida public schools.Chief U.S. District Judge Mark Walker will consider motions for a preliminary injunction as part of a lawsuit that contends the restrictions violate a federal civil-rights law and the First Amendment.
Dozens of hikers became ill during trips to waterfalls near the Grand Canyon
The hikers were visiting a popular Arizona tourist destination that features towering blue-green waterfalls on the Havasupai reservation deep in a gorge neighboring Grand Canyon National Park.

The Visual Arts Center in Punta Gorda was counting on a $25,000 grant from the State of Florida to cover the costs of its Adults with Disabilities pottery classes. In the aftermath of Governor Ron DeSantis' veto of all Florida art grants, the center is scrambling to find new ways to fund the program.
