Lawmakers mute student cell phone use in middle, elementary schools, eye high schools
Florida lawmakers late Friday approved barring students in elementary and middle schools from using cell phones during the school day — and testing the idea in high schools.Current law prevents students from using cell phones during instructional time, but the change would expand that prohibition to throughout the school day in elementary and middle schools. Rep. Demi Busatta, a Coral Gables Republican who spearheaded the proposal, described it as “bell to bell.”
Thousands continue search for those missing following deadly floods in central Texas
Recent storms have slowed recovery efforts in central Texas following the July 4 floods that killed more than 130 people. About 14,000 volunteers are searching for at least 100 people still missing.

Gov. DeSantis criticizes Florida sheriffs over immigration enforcement comments
Gov. Ron DeSantis rebuked some of Florida’s top law enforcement officials Thursday, criticizing their calls to Congress and President Donald Trump to work on a path to citizenship for some undocumented immigrants. “This idea that unless you’re an axe murderer you should be able to stay, that is not consistent with our laws, and it’s also not good policy,” DeSantis said at an event in Bradenton.
