The bat maternity season is approaching in Southwest Florida, and that means homeowners who are the unwitting hosts to a bat roost will have to wait until August to attempt a move. With the mysterious winged mammals like the bonneted bat now endangered, safe roosting is especially important to the animal's future.
Friday at 1 p.m., zoologist and FGCU professor Dr. Jerry Jackson explains the role bats play in southwest Florida’s ecosystem, and what precautions people should take during roosting season.
Also joining the program is Dr. Holly Oberwith the University of Florida to discuss the now federally endangered Florida Bonneted bat that makes it home in Southwest Florida, which also happens to be Florida’s largest bat species with a wingspan up to 20 inches.
