The South Florida Museum announced the death of 69-year-old manatee Snooty, dubbed "the world’s oldest-known manatee," was the result of an accident that caused the aged marine mammal to drown. The manatee had entertained visitors in Bradenton since 1949.
According to the museum, the manatee was found in an underwater area designed to access the exhibit's plumbing and life support system. Museum officials say a panel, normally bolted shut, became dislodged and allowed Snooty to swim in to the area. A necropsy is set to be performed by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
