While new cases of COVID-19 in Florida had been declining since the beginning of the year, the state was seeing roughly 1,500 cases a day at the beginning of June. The trendline started moving up again and the state recently reported more than 56,000 new cases a week ago on August 16, 2021.
Hospitals around the state are seeing record case numbers, and more younger patients are being admitted to hospitals in recent weeks than since the pandemic began nearly a year and a half ago.
