The Naples Discussion Group and Florida Gulf Coast University Honors College are kicking off their 2021-2022 lecture series this Friday, October 22 with a talk by Dr. Andrew Delbanco, Alexander Hamilton Professor of American Studies at Columbia University and president of the Teagle Foundation.
Dr. Delbanco is a bestselling author who was recently elected president of the Society of American Historians. His most recent book, The War Before the War: Fugitive Slaves and the Struggle for America’s Soul from the Revolution to the Civil War was named a New York Times notable book, and was awarded the Anisfield-Wolf prize for “books that have made important contributions to our understanding of racism and human diversity.”
Professor Delbanco has been a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences since 2001. In 2012, he was awarded a National Humanities Medal by President Barack Obama.
His talk, titled “The Future of the Humanities, The Future of Our Country” will be held virtually and is not open to the public.
