River District trolley to return; Commissioners agree to CREW land purchase

Southwest Florida’s first large-scale mosaic is coming soon to the Fort Myers River District. It will be installed at The Ivy, a 274-unit apartment complex. While the tiles that comprise the five-foot-tall by 25-foot-long mosaic are being fabricated by a company based in Wales, Zimmer engaged popular local artist David Acevedo to design the mural on which it is based.

Thirty-nine local artists associated with the Fort Myers Mural Society have painted 57 murals of people and scenes from Fort Myers' past - when the neophyte settlement was a port dominated by seven long piers that jutted into the Caloosahatchee River. The artists met recently to talk about the importance of the project and what they hope the public derives from their paintings.

In the mid-1800’s, the Caloosahatchee River served as the key to the economy in Fort Myers. It served as the main transportation route and it drove commerce. To honor the river’s role in the foundation of Fort Myers’ history, the city will pay tribute through a new art installment.
