FGCU’s Softball team will help build three homes this weekend in Lehigh Acres in collaboration with Habitat for Humanity of Lee and Hendry Counties. The team works on Habitat projects multiple times a year.Head Coach David Deiros has maintained a relationship with the organization for 15 years. Miguel Fernandez, a late Habitat for Humanity of Lee and Hendry County board member and father of a FGCU Softball alumni encouraged the team to help back in 2009.

On Women’s Equality Day, FGCU’s Softball team helped raise the walls for a single mom, Jennifer Silva, through Habitat for Humanity. Jennifer is currently sharing a bedroom with her 11-year-old son and lived her whole life in her parents’ home, but now she’s one step closer to becoming a homeowner.

Habitat for Humanity of Lee and Hendry Counties, in partnership with Coca-Cola Beverages Florida, held a ceremony in Fort Myers Tuesday to welcome Christie Sowell and her family to their new four-bedroom home. Sowell's home was the firtst completed in the 6-acre Habitat HOA community situated between McCormick St. and Prospect Ave. that will eventually feature 29 single-family homes once completed.
