Lee County board Of Commissioners Live Stream

At Lee County’s regular commission meeting Tuesday morning, locals used the public comment period to voice their opinions about removing Confederate memorials in public spaces. People spoke for and against the move.

After the weekend’s violent white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia the Lee County NAACP once again calls for Confederate symbols to be removed from Lee County. There’s a Robert E. Lee statue on Monroe Street in Fort Myers and a portrait of the Confederate General hanging in the Lee County commission chambers. The removal of a statue of Lee from a park in Charlottesville led to the white supremacist rally.

The Tampa Bay Times spent four years compiling what it calls "Florida's most comprehensive database of police shootings." Data from nearly 400 law enforcement agencies across Florida reveal startling racial disparities: forty-one percent of people shot by police were black, despite making up 15 percent of the state's population.

Calling Florida's criminal justice system "broken," and pointing to high rates of re-incarceration and growing costs to keep inmates in prison, the Florida ACLU and Lee County NAACP  are sponsoring a public forum Thursday night in Fort Myers to discuss reform.
