Retired Gen. Norman Schwarzkopf Dies

Chuck Holton

The general known as "Stormin Norman" has died at age 78.

H. Norman Schwarzkopf led the coalition of forces which liberated Kuwait during Operation Desert Storm in 1991. He retired in Tampa after finishing his military service.
Schwarzkopf grew up a military brat and ascended to the highest ranks of the U.S. Army.

Norman Schwarzkopf was big, burly, and known for a temper as aggressive as his military tactics.

The general became a household name in 1991 during the first Gulf War, leading an international force which quickly drove the Iraqi military out of Kuwait.

Schwarzkopf earned three silver stars during the Vietnam War. Later he led the successful Grenada invasion in 1983.

Former President George H.W. Bush says Schwarzkopf was a patriot and "one of the great military leaders of his generation."

Schwarkopf retired in Tampa after his last assignment as Commander-In-Chief of U.S. Central Command at MacDill Air Force Base.
