Southwest Florida Republican Congressmen Split on Hurricane Sandy Aid

The U.S. House passed a $50 billion aid package for the victims of Hurricane Sandy Tuesday night.

Republicans in the U.S. House were split 179-49 against the bill.

Fiscal conservatives opposed a hefty amount of spending added to the bill at the last minute.

Republicans in Congress representing Southwest Florida were among those split on the bill.

U.S. Reps. Vern Buchanan, Tom Rooney and newcomer Trey Radel all voted against the aid package for the northeast.

Radel told WGCU earlier this week he could not bring himself to vote on a bill with so much added spending.

“It is loaded with pork for people in Washington,” Radel explained. “Lawmakers across the nation have found a way to load this up with pork. It’s just so sad to see the victims of Sandy become now victim of the games that happen here in Washington.”

Republican Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart was the only Southwest Florida congressman that voted in favor of the bill.

Buchanan, Rooney and Radel did, however, vote in favor of the original $9.7 billion aid package for Hurricane Sandy victims.
