Walkway Through the Everglades in the Works

universaltheory via Flickr

Plans are in the works to build a pathway through the Everglades that cyclists, joggers and pedestrians can call their own.

The 75-mile-long "River of Grass Greenway" would stretch from Naples to Miami. Initial plans for the pathway have it running parallel to Tamiami Trail, through portions of the Everglades including the Big Cypress National Preserve.

Miami-Dade Department of Parks Project Manager Mark Heineke says the greenway could become a major draw for tourism.

"By actually being on foot or on bicycle, you get a much different perspective than driving 55 or 60 or 65 miles an hour", Heineke said. "When you walk, you can actually stop and enjoy the scenery, take in the sights better than you can when you travel in a car."

Funding has yet to be raised for the entire project -- but planners have $5 million worth of state and federal grants to start with.

The Florida Department of Transportation has already begun the initial planning for the The River of Grass Greenway. The entire project is expected to take five years to complete.
