A delegation from the United Nations has been traveling the US in the past several days on an information-gathering mission and one of their stops was at the office of the Coalition of Immokalee workers in Collier County.
The UN delegation is looking at how to ensure businesses in the US are respecting human rights.
Leonel Perez, a staff member with the Coalition for Immokalee Workers, said the UN delegation is taking a close at the CIW’s Fair Food Program, specifically.
“Here at the coalition we are trying to give them a sense of this program we are building that really is a model for eliminating even things like modern day slavery and other types of abuses through working with farmers and with major companies and with workers—everybody working together,” Perez said.
The UN delegation also visited groups in Arizona, California, New York and West Virginia. It will present its findings in Washington on Wednesday.
