TSA Displays Strange Things Floridians Try to Bring On Planes

The Transportation Security Administration or TSA displayed a collection of confiscated items Tuesday that people have packed in their carry-on luggage so far this year at Southwest Florida International and Punta Gorda Airport. That includes 17 firearms and a meat slicer among other things.

TSA spokesperson Sari Koshetz said the agency wants people to know what they can and cannot bring to the airport.

“It is actually surprising that passengers are not paying more attention to what they put in their bags before they leave home,” said Koshetz. “But unfortunately our officers have stopped 1500 pounds of voluntarily abandoned property at the checkpoints in the two airports year to date. That would include stun guns, brass knuckles also hazardous materials.”

There were more than 2000 pieces of hazardous materials collected at the Punta Gorda airport and more than 9000 pieces at the Fort Myers airport. They include paint thinner, paint and household chemicals. Anything that’s flammable or explosive cannot be in your carry-on or checked baggage.

Koshetz said people can put the items back in their cars or check them through baggage if the item is allowed to travel at all.
