A new study ranks Florida 34th in the nation when it comes to overall health.
The United Health Care Foundation study considered several factors including the percentage of people who smoke, the percentage of those without health insurance and the state's obesity rates.
Being overweight is a factor in being diagnosed with type-two diabetes. The state ranked 38th for the percentage of adults with the disease.
Dr. Roberto Madrid is the west regional medical director for United Health Care. He says this type of diabetes can be prevented.
"If you can reduce your weight by five percent. That's just five pounds for every 100 pounds. You reduce your risk of going from a pre-diabetic state to a diabetic state by 60 percent", said Madrid. "That's better than any medication."
Madrid stresses that being obese can make you susceptible to many different conditions.
"It's linked to cancer, to cardiovascular disease, to high blood pressure and to a whole host just of poor lifestyle and poor quality of life", Madrid said.
Madrid recommends making small changes to lose weight. He says things like taking the stairs instead of the elevator can make a big difference.
The America's Health Rankings report also found that 20 percent of Florida's population lacks health insurance. Only four states fare worse in this area.
