Florida authorities warn of shark dangers along Panhandle beaches after 3 people are attacked
Authorities are using boats to patrol the ocean and warning swimmers about sharks this weekend along Florida’s Gulf Coast, where a woman and two teenage girls were hurt in two separate shark attacks on Friday.The attacks off beaches in the Florida Panhandle led authorities to temporarily close several beaches to swimmers on Friday. Beaches were reopened Saturday, with flags warning of high hazards.
Fort Myers author Annabelle Tometich gets Southern Book Award for 'The Mango Tree'
Fort Myers resident Annabelle Tometich’s compelling recounting of growing up biracial in Southwest Florida in her book The Mango Tree has been awarded the prestigious Southern Book Award.Her book joins two other Southern Book Award winners this year: Rednecks by Taylor Brown (St. Martin’s Press) in Fiction, and Not Like Other Girls by Meredith Adamo (Bloomsbury YA) in Young Readers. Winning authors receive a donation in their name to the charity or nonprofit of their choice.
Authorities survey for more bodies after Air India crash that killed over 240 people
Authorities say a total of 241 passengers and crew members were killed in the craft, with only one passenger surviving. There were likely additional casualties on the ground.
