A new and more transmissible variant is threatening to overwhelm England's health care system, the prime minister said.
Combat Eases in Lebanon, Rice Returns to Israel
Ground combat came nearly to a halt Saturday between the Israeli army and the forces of Hezbollah in Lebanon, as Israel pulled its troops out of the Lebanese town of Bint Jbail. But Israel kept up its air and artillery barrages of southern Lebanon, and Hezbollah continued to fire rockets into Israel. Meanwhile, Secretary of State Rice has returned to Israel for further talks.

Former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto is in self-exile outside Pakistan but faces prosecution should she return. Roma Return to Kosovo, Face Uncertain Future
The German government has begun sending refugees back to Kosovo this week. The majority of the 50,000 people eventually expected to return are Albanian-speaking Gypsies known as Roma. Their deportation is controversial because human rights groups say they won't be safe in Kosovo.

Nepal's king vows to return political power to the people of this Himalayan kingdom, 14 months after he seized control. The king responded to massive pro-democracy protests with a nationwide address in which he said executive power "shall be returned to the people from this day forward."

Texas Court Agrees Children Must Be Returned
The Texas Supreme Court has ruled that polygamist sect children at the heart of an ongoing controversy in that state should be returned to parents. The more than 400 children were taken from the Yearning For Zion Ranch weeks ago amid charges of underage sex at the ranch. A lower court says welfare officials were wrong to take the children from their parents.

Ex-Premier's Return to Pakistan Ends Quickly
Nawaz Sharif, the exiled former prime minister of Pakistan, was deported to Saudi Arabia just hours after arriving in Islamabad. Sharif had returned to Pakistan in the last week to challenge President Gen. Pervez Musharraf in elections.
