Gambusia holbrooki, also known as "mosquitofish," eat mosquito eggs. The Collier County Health Department is distributing free containers of these fish to control the mosquito population in Collier. County in July.
Alert on scam emails for Social Security statement downloads
The Social Security Administration's Office of the Inspector General is cautioning the public to be aware of emails that appear to be from SSA and include a link to download their Social Security statement. The email is an attempt to lure individuals to fraudulent sites that are not associated with SSA.

Lee Commissioners approve Caloosahatchee water projects
The Lee County Board of Commissioners voted to approve grants Tuesday for Caloosahatchee-based water projects, gave the nod to a contract to design drainage improvements in Fort Myers Shores, Russell Park and Iona and approved an agreement to add turn lanes and a traffic signal at Lee Boulevard and Leonard Boulevard in Lehigh Acres.The two water-quality projects approved will allow the county to construct projects to improve water quality flowing to the Caloosahatchee.
NTSB: Pilot who crashed after leaving Naples had sufficient fuel, stopped responding to radio
Terrance Robert Dolan departed Naples Municipal Airport March 29 intending to fly to the Anoka County/Blaine Airport in Blaine, Minnesota, in late March. On approach he contacted the Blaine airport, reported he was inbound and repeated the airport's clearance information. According to the preliminary report just filed by the National Transportation Safety Board, that was the last transmission from Dolan. Four minutes after that last transmission the Blaine tower tried to contact Dolan and issue him a low altitude alert and again at 3 minutes, both times with no response, the NTSB report said.
Captiva Beach renourishment project begins September 20
The Captiva Beach Renourishment Project is set to start September 20 at Turner Beach.The project will run 24 hours a day over an expected 56-day period, to place approximately 1.2 million cubic yards of sand along Captiva’s beaches.
Sanibel Boat Ramp temporarily closing for repairs starting Sept. 8
Construction is set to start Monday on the Sanibel Boat Ramp Dock Replacement Project with the boat ramp expected to be closed for up to 60 days, weather permitting.
