FWC personnel trapped and relocated a black bear from the Florida Gulf Coast University campus on Monday.The trapping follows an alert and sightings of bears around campus in the past week.FGCU police report the animal has been relocated from campus to more suitable habitat.

Former Hendry County Sheriff’s deputy sentenced to federal prison for civil rights violation
Former Hendry County Sheriff’s Office deputy Tyler Williams will serve nearly three years in federal prison for violating an individual’s civil rights and obstructing justice.The 30-year-old Williams was found guilty in February by a federal jury and was sentenced Tuesday by United States District Judge Sheri P. Chappell. Williams was also a former Fort Myers police officer fired for not reporting suspected child abuse. Williams was fired from the Hendry County force at the close of the investigation in 2023.
Colorado State issues slight decrease in hurricane forecast; landfall chances still above-average
The hurricane forecast team at Colorado State University issued a slightly decreased storm forecast Wednesday, calling now for 16 named storms and 8 hurricanes -- one less in each case from initial forecasts -- and a slightly above-normal 2025 Atlantic basin hurricane season.Releasing the downgrade Wednesday morning, the CSU team’s report said the primary reason for the slight decrease is both observed and predicted high levels of Caribbean shear.

Multi-year Sarasota County water meter replacement continuing
Sarasota County is continuing upgrading water meters throughout unincorporated Sarasota County to enhance the utilities system and improve response times during weather events and year-round. This project started in 2023 on Siesta Key and is expected to take five years to complete the remaining meter replacements throughout unincorporated Sarasota County.
Phishing scam involving SunPass seeks to collect personal data; fraudulent sites shut down
SunPass officials say they are aware of a phishing scam involving use of the prepaid toll program's name.The scam uses text messages requesting prompt payment to avoid fees. The messages also contain a link to a fraudulent website in an attempt to collect information. Officials said SunPass does not send these messages.
