Naples Botanical Garden using prescribed burn in Preserve area
Naples Botanical Garden will conduct a prescribed fire on 8.5 acres in the property’s Preserve, south of the Evenstad Horticulture Campus, for several hours today.Carefully controlled fires like this one are an important public safety precaution because they reduce organic matter, such as pine needles and fallen leaves, that can fuel wildfires.

Southwest Florida International Airport has second best April; Florida tourism hits record levels
April saw nearly 1.2 million passengers go through Southwest Florida International Airport, an increase from the April 2024 passenger count, but a decrease for year-over-year statistics.The Lee County Port Authority says that the April number – 1.178 million passengers -- was the second-best April in the history of the airport.

National Park Service issues record of decision on Big Cypress National Preserve Backcountry Access Plan, Wilderness Study
Big Cypress National Preserve on Monday issued the record of decision (ROD) for the Preserve’s Backcountry Access Plan / Wilderness Study / Environmental Impact Statement. The ROD identifies the alternative selected for implementation and concludes the environmental review process. The selected action serves as a blueprint to guide the NPS's management of the Preserve’s backcountry access and use and will provide new access to the Preserve while protecting natural and cultural resources and providing for public enjoyment.
Naples Airport to ‘fight water with water’ to fend off storm surge
To help stave off future storm surge situations, the Naples Airport’s operations team recently completed training on a new flood barrier system designed to protect the airport’s buildings, vital equipment and technology.Naples Airport Authority purchased 3,000 feet of industrial-grade flexible tubing. Filled with water, linked together and anchored into place the tubing creates an airtight barrier proven more effective than sandbags at holding back floodwaters.
