In 1950, a red-haired Alabama boy who'd learned about radio and electronics in the U.S. Army opened a recording studio to document the blues and country music he loved. A new box set compiles the beginnings of Sam Phillips' Memphis Recording Service, and the record label he would soon create.

Jim Stewart, co-founder of Stax Records in Memphis, dies at age 92
The white Tennessee farm boy and fiddle player co-founded the influential record label with his sister in a Black, inner-city Memphis neighborhood and helped build the soulful "Memphis sound."
SWFL arrests made in cybercrime cases involving child sexual abuse material
The arrest of three men in connection with separate and unrelated child sexual abuse material cases was described today by Florida Attorney General James Uthemeyer at a media briefing in Fort Myers.Those arrested included former LaBelle resident 46-year-old Jason Harrison of Jacksonville, 41-year-old Kevin Sheffield of Naples and 34-year-old Travis Montgomery of Bradenton.

Miles Hoffman
Morning Edition music commentator Miles Hoffman is the author of The NPR Classical Music Companion, now in its tenth printing from the Houghton Mifflin Company. Before joining Morning Edition in 2002, Hoffman entertained and enlightened the nationwide audience of NPR's Performance Today every week for 13 years with his musical commentary, "Coming to Terms," a listener-friendly tour through the many foreign words and technical terms peculiar to the world of classical music.
Rice Seeks Military Assurances in Central Asia
Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice begins a weeklong visit to Central Asia in Kyrgyzstan. She is seeking assurances that the United States will have access to military bases in the region. Neighboring Uzbekistan has ordered U.S. troops out of a base used for operations in Afghanistan.
