Big Cypress National Preserve is issuing a temporary closure in certain areas of the preserve during prescribed fire activity beginning Wednesday, January 8.Closure includes all areas and trails within the treatment perimeter, trails on the perimeter of the unit will remain open for use. Southwest Florida International Airport turned in a record-setting year for passenger traffic in 2024 with nearly three-quarters of a million more people filing through the Lee County air travel site.That increased passenger traffic was also reflected during December when 1,121,793 passengers traveled through RSW. This was an increase of 2.5 percent compared to December 2023. Year-to-date, passenger traffic was up 9.5 percent.

The Florida Division of Emergency Management will host a series of application assistance sessions for Elevate Florida, a statewide residential mitigation program designed to protect homes and communities from natural disasters such as hurricanes and floods.Elevate Florida representatives will be available at Tringali Community Center, 3460 N. The U.S. Geological Survey reported Saturday that a 7.6 magnitude quake was recorded 209 km south southwest of George Town in the Cayman Islands.The USGS reported that a powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck the Caribbean, about 130 miles southwest of the Cayman Islands, which triggered a tsunami advisory for several islands nearby Saturday evening. The advisory was lifted several hours later.
