Canned beef stew recalled due to possible contamination from wood
Hormel Foods Corporation is recalling approximately 256,185 pounds of canned beef stew product that may be contaminated with foreign material, specifically wood.The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced the recall Wednesday saying the product was shipped to retail locations nationwide.
Fort Myers Amateur Radio Club annual Field Day June 28-29
The Fort Myers Amateur Radio Club is hosting an annual nationwide emergency preparedness exercise and public outreach event demonstrating the critical role of amateur radio in post-disaster recovery.The 24-hour American Radio Relay League Field Day event runs from noon June 28 until noon June 29 at North Fort Myers Community Park, 2000 Recreation Park Way, North Fort Myers.
A baker's dozen 'hot dogs' rescued at Buckingham site in joint effort by animal welfare organizations
A baker's dozen of puppies found suffering in extreme heat in a garage in Buckingham earlier this week were rescued in a joint effort by two Southwest Florida animal welfare organizations.The Cape Coral Animal Shelter and Gulf Coast Humane Society joined forces to help the stressed and endangered young dogs.
Naples drywall manager pleads guilty to fraud scheme that caused $4 million loss in U.S. tax revenues
A Naples man pleaded guilty before Magistrate Judge Kyle C. Dudek for the Middle District of Florida to conspiring to defraud the United States by operating an off-the-books payroll scheme. The plea must be accepted by a U.S. district court judge.
Former Orlando attorney gets prison following investigation into client fund misappropriation
Stephen Jones, a former attorney from Orlando, was sentenced to 42 months in prison, followed by 10 years of probation, for Scheme to Defraud over $50,000, a first-degree felony, for misappropriating funds that were due to a former client. One of the issues involved a Lee County case where court documents said Jones stole $100,000 in insurance proceeds from the insurance settlement of a Vietnam veteran, who was hit by a bicycle in Lehigh Acres in 2019.
Lee Health expanding plans for Fort Myers medical campus
Lee Health recently approved an additional $150.5 million investment to enhance its upcoming Fort Myers facility, including a new patient tower and an onsite childcare center.The expansion will increase the hospital’s capacity by 92 beds, including 48 acute care beds, 20 skilled nursing unit beds, and shelled space for an additional 24 acute care beds.
Youth are front and center in Six Mile Cypress Slough’s photo contest honoring Carolyn Babb
There were 64 photos entered in the Youth category — age 17 and younger — by 42 photographers in the 2025 Six Mile Cypress Slough’s photo contest honoring Carolyn Babb. A total of 270 photos were submitted in all categories combined by 113 different people. Twenty-nine photos received honors. The contest is limited to amateur photographers.
US 41 Caloosahatchee Bridge open after months of closure
The Florida Department of Transportation has completed most of the construction work on the US 41 Caloosahatchee River Bridge a year ahead of schedule and as of Friday all travel lanes on the bridge are open.FDOT cautioned that the newly 8-foot-wide sidewalk on the span will remain closed until the end of this year or early 2025.Construction crews will continue working on-site to complete the sidewalk and other remaining tasks. This may require occasional lane closures at night through December and possibly beyond.
Drought takes hold: Hendry County joins Sarasota County in burn bans; Punta Gorda limits watering
A burn ban is now in effect for unregulated fires for all of Hendry County as dry weather conditions impact the area.Sarasota County also activated a burn ban as of Jan. 9 and Punta Gorda has activated a watering limitation.
