  • A Cape Coral man is one of nearly 20 Floridians charged in a nationwide health care fraud case.Eric Strom Holland, 55, was charged with wire fraud and distributing and dispensing controlled substances in connection with an alleged scheme to deceive doctors into writing controlled substance prescriptions based on false pretenses.The charges stem from the 2025 National Health Care Fraud Takedown, which resulted in criminal charges against Holland and 323 other defendants, including 96 doctors, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, and other licensed medical professionals, in 50 federal districts and 12 State Attorneys General’s Offices across the United States, for their alleged participation in various health care fraud schemes involving over $14.6 billion in intended loss.

  • Terrance Robert Dolan departed Naples Municipal Airport March 29 intending to fly to the Anoka County/Blaine Airport in Blaine, Minnesota, in late March. On approach he contacted the Blaine airport, reported he was inbound and repeated the airport's clearance information. According to the preliminary report just filed by the National Transportation Safety Board, that was the last transmission from Dolan. Four minutes after that last transmission the Blaine tower tried to contact Dolan and issue him a low altitude alert and again at 3 minutes, both times with no response, the NTSB report said.
  • Three black bears have been killed in an area of Collier County that saw a man and a dog fatally attacked on Monday.The early Monday attack resulted in the death of 89-year-old Robert Markel in the rural community of Jerome. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission is continuing to investigate the attack which occurred in the area of State Road 29 and U.S. 41, just south of Big Cypress Wildlife Management Area.
