FDEM hosts Elevate Florida program assistance sessions in Englewood March 19-21
The Florida Division of Emergency Management will host a series of application assistance sessions for Elevate Florida, a statewide residential mitigation program designed to protect homes and communities from natural disasters such as hurricanes and floods.Elevate Florida representatives will be available at Tringali Community Center, 3460 N. Access Road in Englewood, between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. March 19-21. Residents can learn about the program’s eligibility requirements, types of projects available, and receive assistance with their applications. Elevate Florida educational presentations will take place daily at noon and 5 p.m.
Tsunami Warning Center rescinds tsunami alert for coastlines along the Caribbean Sea
The U.S. Geological Survey reported Saturday that a 7.6 magnitude quake was recorded 209 km south southwest of George Town in the Cayman Islands.The USGS reported that a powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck the Caribbean, about 130 miles southwest of the Cayman Islands, which triggered a tsunami advisory for several islands nearby Saturday evening. The advisory was lifted several hours later.
Causeway Islands Park reopens as first phase of project is completed
The Causeway Islands Park opened Thursday morning on the Sanibel Causeway with its first phase of amenities, the first time that visitors were able to enjoy the shoreline since the devastation of Hurricane Ian in September 2022.The park had been closed due to the essential rebuilding activities by the Florida Department of Transportation, which used the site during the critical process of rebuilding the Sanibel Causeway to make it more resilient.

Three bears killed in Collier area where man, dog fatally attacked; DNA sent to Gainesville for testing
Three black bears have been killed in an area of Collier County that saw a man and a dog fatally attacked on Monday.The early Monday attack resulted in the death of 89-year-old Robert Markel in the rural community of Jerome. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission is continuing to investigate the attack which occurred in the area of State Road 29 and U.S. 41, just south of Big Cypress Wildlife Management Area.
Fort Myers Make-A-Wish teen is recipient of 170,000th Disney Wish
A 13-Year-Old Fort Myers girl was the 170,000th Disney Wish Recipient on Disneyland Resort’s 70th Anniversary in July. The tech-loving Make-A-Wish teen was hosted by Disney Imagineers at Walt Disney Imagineering and Disneyland for her wish.

Marco Island utilities to conduct smoke testing Aug. 20 – Sept. 29
Testing of the City of Marco Island sewer collection system utilizing smoke to find and repair leaks is scheduled for Aug. 20 through Sept. 29.This test, which involves forcing smoke into the sanitary sewer lines, will check for leaks, breaks and defects in the system. The smoke is odorless, creates no fire hazard, and should not enter homes or businesses unless there is defective plumbing in need of repair.

Sarasota County expects $210,094,000 in additional hurricane recovery funding
Sarasota County will get a new $210,094,000 allocation from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) Community Development Block Grant – Disaster Recovery to assist with recovery and mitigation efforts from Hurricanes Idalia, Helene and Milton and Tropical Storm Debby.The county created the Resilient SRQ program in 2023 to support Hurricane Ian recovery from the prior allocation of $201,535,000 in CDBG-DR funding. It assists the community in rebuilding homes, repairing infrastructure and addressing unmet needs from Hurricane Ian.
Multi-year Sarasota County water meter replacement continuing
Sarasota County is continuing upgrading water meters throughout unincorporated Sarasota County to enhance the utilities system and improve response times during weather events and year-round. This project started in 2023 on Siesta Key and is expected to take five years to complete the remaining meter replacements throughout unincorporated Sarasota County.
