Youth are front and center in Six Mile Cypress Slough’s photo contest honoring Carolyn Babb
There were 64 photos entered in the Youth category — age 17 and younger — by 42 photographers in the 2025 Six Mile Cypress Slough’s photo contest honoring Carolyn Babb. A total of 270 photos were submitted in all categories combined by 113 different people. Twenty-nine photos received honors. The contest is limited to amateur photographers.
Acreage acquisition expands Florida’s protected lands with major conservation investment; Collier-Hendry corridor included
Nearly 4,000 acres in Collier and Hendry counties are part of a nearly 35,000-acre package of what is labeled as critical conservation land approved for protection Wednesday.Additionally, approval of a permanent agricultural land conservation easement for a nearly 4,000-acre area in Charlotte County will help support Southwest Florida’s water resources.The approval came via Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida Cabinet through the Florida Forever Program and legislative appropriations, marking a significant step in preserving the state’s natural heritage.

Ben Quartermaine named first director of Sarasota County's new Stormwater Department
Ben Quartermaine has been selected as the county’s director of the newly structured Stormwater Department. Sarasota County leaders voted Tuesday to create a separate stormwater department — breaking it off from Public Works — just days after a joint investigation by Florida Trident and Suncoast Searchlight revealed systemic mismanagement ahead of catastrophic flooding from Tropical Storm Debby.The decision, which includes hiring a new department head, came during a tense budget workshop marked by blistering public criticism. Residents packed the small meeting chambers, demanding accountability from Public Works Director Spencer Anderson and County Administrator Jonathan Lewis for what they described as years of neglect and failed leadership.

David Lawrence Centers kicks off construction of Diermeier Access and Integrated Care Center
David Lawrence Centers for Behavioral Health, a comprehensive, not-for-profit behavioral health care provider serving children, adults and families in Collier County, kicked off construction of its Diermeier Access and Integrated Care Center with a demolition ceremony Friday.Centers officials said the commencement marks a significant milestone in the organization’s Hope for Collier: Building Stronger Minds Together initiative.
