Three bears killed in Collier area where man, dog fatally attacked; DNA sent to Gainesville for testing
Three black bears have been killed in an area of Collier County that saw a man and a dog fatally attacked on Monday.The early Monday attack resulted in the death of 89-year-old Robert Markel in the rural community of Jerome. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission is continuing to investigate the attack which occurred in the area of State Road 29 and U.S. 41, just south of Big Cypress Wildlife Management Area.

Southwest Florida segments of a nationwide protest that raged on Saturday drew significant numbers with more than 1,000 attending a rally in Fort Myers.There were multiple organizers for the Saturday protests including the Women's March, Hands Off, and 50501. Whatever the inspiration, it drew a lot of interest.

Big Cypress prescribed fire in Boot Hill area resumes with change: Florida National Scenic Trail open
Big Cypress National Preserve has issued a temporary closure to promote visitor safety during prescribed fire activity beginning Tuesday, Jan. 14. Closure incudes all areas and trails within the treatment perimeter, trails on the perimeter of the unit will remain open for use. During the closure all recreational use including off-road vehicles, hiking, camping, hunting and commercial activities are prohibited in the designated areas. Unlike the closure in the area last week, during this closure all parts of the Florida National Scenic Trail will remain open.Prescribed fire is a carefully planned fire that uses fire science and specific environmental conditions to meet management goals for the preserve. A prescribed fire is one of Big Cypress’s best tools to help create a mosaic of diverse habitats, manage for our endangered species, and reduce the threat of a destructive wildfire.
New hospitals in Lee, Sarasota counties; one started, one planned
Lee Health broke ground for a new campus off Challenger Boulevard in the eastern part of the county while the Sarasota County Public Hospital Board approved a $450 million plan Tuesday to build North Port’s first hospital on North Sumter Boulevard in North Port.
Lehigh Acres man faces charges for alleged role in major theft ring targeting luxury-level vehicles
A federal grand jury indictment names Michel Serrano of Lehigh Acres as one of three men alleged to be part of a major Florida theft ring targeting vehicles including premium pickups, high-end Jeep models and luxury brands such as the Infiniti.The 34-year-old Serrano faces charges of conspiracy to commit interstate transportation of stolen motor vehicles and the sale and possession of stolen motor vehicles, as well as two counts of interstate transportation of stolen motor vehicles. If convicted on all counts, Serrano faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison. The indictment described Serrano as registered agent, president and treasurer of Serrano Trucks Corp. of Lehigh Acres. The Florida Division of Corporations lists the company as inactive.
