Single Gender Education (Encore)

The idea of single sex classrooms has been gaining interest nation-wide since the U.S. Department of Education published new rules governing the practice in 2006. Now a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union against the Hillsborough County public school district over single gender education settings has been garnering national attention. According to the ACLU, the Hillsborough County School District has implemented single-sex classroom environments in as many as 18 schools since 2009. Supporters of the practice say that for some students, it creates a more effective learning environment, but opponents of the single-gender education say it’s based on outdated gender stereotypes. We’ll listen back to our 2013 conversation weighing the pros and cons of single-sex classrooms in Florida schools.
