Responsible for overseeing the county’s elections, including the registration and education of voters, the Lee Supervisor of Elections position is up for election this year.

Vote-by-Mail and Early Voting informational notices were mailed Monday to 348,000 Lee County voters by the Lee County Supervisor of Elections office.

Florida supervisors of elections are pushing back on a rule proposed by Gov. Ron DeSantis’ administration to update standards for determining voters’ intent on ballots, saying the proposal includes “inconsistencies” that could lead to problems for county canvassing boards.The proposal lays out what canvassing boards must consider when trying to figure out what voters were trying to choose when they have not filled in circles next to candidates’ names or issues on the ballot. Voters frequently use checkmarks, lines, stars, other marks — or sometimes words — to indicate their choices.

The Lee County Supervisor of Elections office is now using BallotTrax to keep voters updated on the status of their vote-by-mail ballots.

Based on 2020 U.S. Census data, as many as 1 in 4 eligible Americans are not registered to vote. That’s according to NationalVoterRegistrationday.org. The website also says millions of Americans every year find themselves unable to vote because they miss a registration deadline, don’t update their registration, or aren’t sure how to register.The solution is an annual, national nonpartisan civic holiday to educate and encourage eligible voters to register. This year, National Voter Registration Day falls on September 20. The day includes online and in person events across the country to register voters ahead of the hotly contested midterm elections.
