  • A Port Charlotte man has been found guilty in U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia of multiple felony and misdemeanor offenses following a bench trial before U.S. District Court Judge Randolph D. Moss.A bench trial refers to the type of trial that does not involve a jury but is conducted by the judge alone, in which the judge both decides the facts of the case and applies the law.The charges against John Joseph Richter, 39, of Port Charlotte, related to his conduct during the Jan. 6, 2021, breach of the U.S. Capitol. His actions and those of others disrupted a joint session of the U.S. Congress convened to ascertain and count the electoral votes related to the 2020 presidential election.
  • John Anthony Schubert III, 47, of Bradenton, Florida, pleaded guilty Thursday in the District of Columbia to a felony offense of assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers. Schubert will be sentenced by U.S. District Judge Christopher R. Cooper on July 11.Schubert's actions and the actions of others disrupted a joint session of the U.S. Congress convened to ascertain and count the electoral votes related to the 2020 presidential election.
  • A Florida man charged with interfering with police during the Jan. 6, 2021, siege at the U.S. Capitol is connected to a “network” of supporters who have helped other Capitol riot defendants avoid capture by the FBI, prosecutors said in a court filing this week.A federal judge on Thursday ordered Thomas Paul Osborne to be released from a Florida jail while he awaits trial on charges that he grabbed a police officer’s baton during a mob’s attack on the Capitol. Before the judge ruled, a Justice Department prosecutor argued that Osborne poses a risk of fleeing after his Feb. 22 arrest.

Her actions and the actions of others disrupted a joint session of the U.S. Congress convened to ascertain and count the electoral votes related to the 2020 presidential election.Lin Marie Carey, 56, is charged in a criminal complaint filed in the District of Columbia with obstruction of an official proceeding, a felony, and misdemeanor offenses of knowingly entering or remaining in any restricted building or grounds without lawful authority, disorderly and disruptive conduct in a restricted building or grounds, disorderly conduct in a Capitol building, parading, picketing, and demonstrating in a Capitol building.The FBI arrested Carey on Feb. 28, in Naples. She has made her initial appearance in the Middle District of Florida.
  • Two Florida men are charged in an indictment unsealed today in federal court for the District of Columbia with multiple felonies and misdemeanors related to their conduct during the breach of the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021. Tom Vournas, 62, of Bradenton, and Leonard Lobianco, 52, of North Port, are named in the indictment and were arrested Thursday in Florida by the FBI. They will make their initial appearance in the Middle District of Florida.
