The University of Florida fell one position to No. 6 among public universities in the new, annual national rankings published overnight Sunday by U.S. News & World Report, even as the state's flagship school climbed one spot to No. 28 in the magazine's rankings of top public and private universities overall.

Florida state universities' reported spending on diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, as well as teachings on race, are less than 1% of budgets.

Information released by the governor’s office said DeSantis is supporting legislation for the 2023 Legislative Session to "further elevate civil discourse and intellectual freedom in higher education, further pushing back against the tactics of liberal elites who suppress free thought in the name of identity politics and indoctrination."

Gov. Ron DeSantis' office is scrutinizing diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives at Florida's universities, as part of a campaign to root out what they claim is "indoctrination". But a top official overseeing the schools says some of the programs should continue.

State colleges and universities have until Jan. 13 to submit information to the DeSantis administration about resources related to diversity, equity and inclusion and critical race theory.
