As of Monday morning, the Army Corps of Engineers had halted releases of water from Lake Okeechobee to the west coast. This came after the decision to stop sending water toward the east coast late last month. Still, the persistent blue-green algae bloom brought Gov. Rick Scott to Southwest Florida for a firsthand look.

Governor Rick Scott and the Florida Cabinet approved a work plan in June that prioritizes several projects aimed at buying, conserving and managing environmentally sensitive land in Southwest Florida.

A group of Southwest Floridians rallied Tuesday in opposition to Gov. Rick Scott and his backers at Centennial Park in Downtown Fort Myers. More than a hundred people, of all ages, gathered on the opening of the 2017 legislative session for the annual Awake the State rally.

Florida lawmakers hid hundreds of millions of dollars for special projects inside funding for state universities, a report from the Naples Daily News claims.

The projects, added without debate or input from the public or other lawmakers, don't officially appear in the state's $82.3 billion budget approved by lawmakers and signed by Gov. Rick Scott.
