As of Monday morning, the Army Corps of Engineers had halted releases of water from Lake Okeechobee to the west coast. This came after the decision to stop sending water toward the east coast late last month. Still, the persistent blue-green algae bloom brought Gov. Rick Scott to Southwest Florida for a firsthand look.

As the annual drama of blue-green algae plays out near the mouth of the Caloosahatchee River, a persistent bloom of red tide has festered off the Gulf Coast for two months longer than usual. Tourists near the Mucky Duck on Captiva Island said Friday that they didn't mind.

While red tide rages along Southwest Florida’s Gulf coast, blue-green algae is making its way westward along the Caloosahatchee River toward the Gulf.  The Florida Department of Health in Lee County recently issued a health advisory for the Alva Boat Ramp, Davis Boat Ramp, and the Franklin Lock and Dam.

Tens of thousands across the country rallied Saturday for the reunification of immigrant families separated at the U.S.-Mexico border, and hundreds gathered at one march in Southwest Florida.
