Regan McCarthy is the Assignment Editor and Senior News Producer for WFSU News/ Florida Public Radio. Before coming to Tallahassee, Regan graduated with honors from Indiana University’s Ernie Pyle School of Journalism. She worked for several years for NPR member station WFIU in Bloomington, Ind., where she covered local and state government and produced feature and community stories. She has also worked for the London Business Matters Magazine and the Rochester Sentinel, a daily local newspaper. She is the recipient of six professional broadcast awards including first-place Best Radio Feature from the Indiana chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists. State health officials reported 8,109 new cases of COVID-19, Wednesday, increasing the statewide total to 545,901 cases. Aug. 12 marked the 17th consecutive day, health officials have reported fewer than 10,000 new cases in a day.The Florida Department of Health also reported 212 new coronavirus-related deaths, Wednesday, bringing the statewide death toll to 8,898 fatalities. Tuesday marked Florida’s single-day record high of 276 deaths. -
State Health officials reported 6,229 new cases of COVID-19, Sunday increasing the statewide total to 532,806 cases. The Florida Department of Health also reported 77 new coronavirus-related deaths, Aug. 9, for a total of 8,315 fatalities. Sunday’s numbers compare to 8,502 confirmed cases and 187 new deaths reported Saturday.Despite Sunday's relatively low number of new coronavirus-related fatalities reported, the daily average number of deaths over the past seven days stands at 158 deaths. -

State health officials reported 4,752 new cases of COVID-19, Monday bringing the statewide total to 491,884 cases.Monday's reported new cases of the virus mark the lowest single-day increase since June 26, when the Florida Department of Health reported 3,366 new cases. June 26 was also the same day Gov. Ron DeSantis ordered bars to close for a second time since the beginning of the pandemic.Monday also marked the ninth consecutive day the state has reported fewer than 10,000 new cases of the virus in a single day. -
State health officials reported 8,892 new cases of COVID-19, Monday, increasing the statewide total to 432,747 cases. Monday marked the 34th consecutive day Florida has experienced a single day increase of at least 5,000 new cases, although it's also the lowest daily total reported since July 9.The Florida Department of Health also reported 77 new coronavirus-related deaths, yesterday, bringing the statewide death toll to 5,931 fatalities. -
Thursday marked another record high day for coronavirus-related deaths in Florida with health officials reporting 156 fatalities. Thursday’s deaths mark an 18 percent increase over the previous single-day high of 132 deaths reported Tuesday.The statewide death toll now stands at 4,782 fatalities. Florida's seven-day average for deaths grew to more than 95 a day, Thursday, which is more than double the daily death average less than two weeks ago. -
State health officials reported another 12,624 cases of COVID-19, Monday, marking Florida's second highest number of new confirmed cases in a single day after shattering the national single day record, Sunday of more than 15,000 cases.Florida's total number of cases of the virus now stands at 282,435. The Florida Department of Health also reported 35 new coronavirus-related deaths, July 13, increasing the statewide death toll to 4,277 fatalities.Of the 2,642,613 tests that have been performed in Florida so far, 10.7% have been positive for the virus. Florida's positivity rate has averaged around 14.3% for the past two weeks, which is about three times what it was when the first phase of Florida's reopening plan went into effect in May. -
Gov. Ron DeSantis is pushing for more coronavirus antibody testing in Florida. He says the tests will help health officials have a better understanding of how the virus has spread throughout the state. But some experts have raised concerns about the accuracy of the tests. -
Florida hit a grim new record, Sunday, as state health officials reported 15,300 new cases of COVID-19, which shatters the national record for the highest number of new confirmed cases of the virus reported in a single day. California held the previous record with 11,694 cases of the virus reported four days prior, and before that New York set the record with 11,571 cases reported April 15th.Sunday marked the third consecutive day of single-day increases of at least 10,000 cases of the virus and the 19th consecutive day of at least 5,000 new cases. Florida’s total caseload now stands 269,811 cases.The Florida Department of Health also reported 45 new coronavirus-related deaths, July 12, increasing the statewide death toll to 4,242 fatalities. Last week, Florida reported more coronavirus-related deaths than during any previous seven-day period since the pandemic began with an average of 71 deaths per day. -
Florida Senate President Bill Galvano says local school districts must follow an order from the state Department of Education to offer in-person classes five days a week starting in August. Some school districts are pushing back on the order.
